Archives For gifts

I was very spoiled this year both by people close to me and friends from around the world. As I love reading others posts about the presents they receive over the holidays, I decided to do one of my own. It’s not to brag or anything, just to show my appreciation for the gifts I received from the most wonderful people. My family doesn’t really believe in gift giving so this is the most I have received in about ten years so the feeling of being spoiled is definitely there. It might not be a lot to others, but it is to me. We have a very small family so there has never been an abundance of anything. Anyways, this is what I received!

I ❤ Makeup – Death By Chocolate Palette.

What makes me excited for Christmas

Christmas lights everywhere

I love this time of the year mainly because of the lights. It’s so nice to drive around after dark and look at how everyone has decorated their houses or trees or bushes. I really wish having lights outside would be a tradition all year round because it is absolutely stunning to look at. I think maybe I would like it less if I did see it constantly though, I wouldn’t have time to really appreciate it for what it is.

Shopping for presents

I love buying presents for people. I may not be the best at finding the right present for everyone but I will try my darndest to do so. If I can’t find something super personal I will just go for something people generally like to be on the safe side. It could also be fun to buy something completely different so that they can get the chance to try something new without having to spend a lot of money on it too.

Listening to Christmas songs

It doesn’t necessarily have to be traditional Christmas songs either. Lately I have been absolutely loving Sia’s Christmas album and this one has been on repeat a lot.

Spending time with family

There’s not much of my family left but I do enjoy spending time with those who are still with us. Although the lack of presence from those who have passed away in the most recent years is very noticeable, we still make the most of it and try to keep Christmas a joyous holiday and try not to dwell on the past or think about how it could be.

Christmas food and drinks is so good. Once a year you get to stuff yourself so full you’ll regret it the next morning and it’s wonderful. I always try to not overeat but it happens no matter what I do.

Preparing for the holidays?

Holiday

For many, me included, Christmas is the most stressful time of the year. It feels like no matter what you do to prepare, it is never enough, or you always end up forgetting something vital. I try my best to write lists, to plan what I need to do down to every detail, but even then I still end up forgetting something I shouldn’t.  Anyways, I wanted to share some of the type of lists I make and pretty much reuse year after year, just changing some minor details to make it work.

One: Christmas gift list

I write down all of the people I give gifts or other things to, whether it’s the full on Christmas gifts or acquaintances that I send Christmas cards to. I have columns for names, if its gifts or cards, what I did or will buy for them and the estimated price. I sum everything up at the bottom to make sure it’s still affordable and so that I can put aside the right amount of money for it. I always try not to go overboard, and I keep previous lists to make sure I dont end up giving them something I already have. Some things are convenient to receive again, but most gifts are like a one-time-thing.

Two: Gift supplies

I always need to have cute wrapping paper, cute ribbons to make bows with, tape, a good pair of scissors, small greeting cards to put on the wrapped gifts and glitter if needed. I always want gifts to look really neat, but also cozy and hand wrapped at the same time, if you get what I mean. I don’t think it would be as nice if it looked as if a machine had wrapped it for you, it kinda needs to show that you did it yourself. I have a list with everything I need that I keep in my wallet during the holidays so I can always remember to purchase what I need if I run out of it.

Three: Food stuff

Preparing for a Christmas feast is never easy. Everyone wants different things to drink, not everyone wants the same food. Some people are vegetarian, some have food allergies, some are just picky and the list goes on. Reaching out to those who will join you for your Christmas dinner to get to know their dietary needs is very important! I have experienced before that I have been invited to a dinner, and when the day comes, they haven’t taken into count that I can’t have soy or dairy even if I have told them. It’s not fun for them, and not fun for me so I try to lead with a good example when I am the host. After food and drinks comes dessert, what would be appropriate to serve after such a heavy dinner? I tend to serve some sort of fruit cocktail and a whipped cream of sorts, it’s light enough that people will want to eat it. I also have a lot of different types of Christmas cookies that they can help themselves to whenever.
I have a basic list of items I will generally need that I reuse from year to year. New people aren’t often added to the dinner parties so the content of the list rarely changes. It’s more likely for someone to pass away than to be added in.

And that’s basically the three most important categories for me during the holidays. The fourth would probably be clothing, since I always want to look my best. I’m not too big of a fan of flashy clothing but it should look neat at least.

How do you deal with holiday preparations? Do you wait until last minute or are you planning ahead?

I’m not sure if I would have enough to write if I just chose one holiday, so I will do more than one! Let’s start out with the one coming up first.

Halloween

  • Dressing up! This is obviously the favorite thing for most people. I love being able to dress up as pretty much whatever I want, it’s nice to take a break from my regular appearance.
  • The social aspect. People come together, drink, go trick or treating, eat candy and generally have a good time.
  • The spookiness. I don’t really enjoy being scared, but I do like an eerie vibe. I guess I like creepy things more than downright scary things.

Christmas

  • Buying presents. I loooove buying presents for people. I love watching people open presents. The looks on their faces just fills me with so much joy.
  • Baking. I love to bake, and making your own Christmas yummies feels extra special. I especially enjoy baking gingerbread cookies.
  • Decorating. Decorating trees, decorating my home, anything that can be decorated will be. It just makes my home so cozy.
  • Cooking. Christmas food is the best food. It’s so savory and you feel full for ages afterwards. I always get so sleepy after Christmas dinner because I’m so full and my body just shuts down in the best kind of way.
  • Decorating the Christmas tree.
  • Seeing family that you probably don’t see as often. Christmas really is a time for family to come together.
  • Opening presents. I’m sure everyone loves doing that! I hate receiving them, but I love opening them, it’s really weird.

New years

  • Fireworks. They’re just so beautiful to look at. Could definitely be less noisy, my cats are always freaking out but, yeah, pretty.
  • Spending time with loved ones while counting down until midnight. It’s funny that we do, because nothing feels different once the clock strikes twelve.
  • The new years dinner. People always plan these extravagant dinner parties and I love it so much.

Easter

  • Decorating Easter eggs. Painting, dyeing, gluing stuff onto them. Anything is really fun, especially if you have someone younger to do it with. Nothing wrong with painting them by yourself though!
  • Setting up and planning Easter egg hunts for the younger ones! There’s no kids left in my family, they all grew up so can’t do that much anymore, I really miss it!
  • Watching old cartoons on the tv. During most holidays they send old special episodes, or create shows just for that holiday. It’s nice to have something to wake up to every day.

There, that’s some of my favorite things about the holidays. Someone is probably going to say that I missed Thanksgiving and other holidays, but they are not really a thing here in Norway.  What is your favorite things about the holidays?

Sorry for the delay in posts, my grandmother passed away recently and i needed some time off.

Day 6. Share a fond childhood Christmas memory

I think the only thing i remember about Christmas when i was younger was celebrating it with my grandparents. They have both sadly passed away now so we cannot ever celebrate it with them again, but the memories are still as strong.

We would all gather in their old house, decorate the Christmas tree, stuff all of our gifts under it and then watch cartoons until it was time to eat. Then we would listen to stories told by my grandfather, they could be about anything. Then we had dessert, opened presents and just spent time together until it was time for bed.

Day 7. A photo day, share some Christmas pictures, past or present.

I don’t have any pictures from previous Christmas celebrations, and this years’ hasn’t happened yet, so have some Christmas-ish pictures instead!
