The skincare tag

October 23, 2017 — 10 Comments

This tag was introduced to me by Lisa through her Endless blog challenge posts. It was a  tag originally created by makeupTIA, focused on skincare.

  1. What is your skin type?
I have combination skin, I think! It really depends on the season. During the summer its more on the oily side, during winter its more dry. It feels pretty much perfect during autumn.
  2. How do you store your skincare?
My skincare is all over the place. Face washes and masks are in the bathroom, lip balms, toners, micellar waters and so on are on my vanity in my bedroom. Some hand creams are here and there and yeah, it’s everywhere!
  3. Favorite ingredient?
Tea tree oil! It has helped me to vanish so many zits and red spots! It’s a real life saver, honestly.
  4. Most indulgent product?
I used to have an Elizabeth Arden 8 hour lip balm thing… It cost almost 200 NOK (which is crazy for just a lip balm), plus it wasn’t cruelty free either so I’m not buying it again. It felt really good on my lips though.

  5. Best budget buy?
Most of my skincare are budget buys because I always wait for sales to purchase them. Conveniently they are very frequent so I get most of it half off from vita.no.
  6. Do you use any tools?
No, I do not! My skin is very, very sensitive and I’m scared that a thing like the Clarisonic could damage it. I use a brush to apply face masks though, it’s very convenient. I should probably invest in one of those silicone applicators too.
  7. Best mask?
Again, it’s not a cruelty free product, but the best mask I have used is the black charcoal and clay mask from L’Oreal. It’s called glow or something like that. It just makes my skin feel so soft, nourished and wonderful. It has never felt better than when I use it.

  8. Best multi-use?
I don’t really have anything that is multi-use. I buy things for specific purposes and use them for those specific purposes.
  9. If you had to stick to only one brand, what would it be?
I don’t really know any brand that has absolutely everything I need, but maybe Simple? They’re cruelty free at least and I use both a foaming cleanser and micellar water from them. Those are like the two most needed items that I have.
  10. Best spot treatment?
Any kind of tea tree oil serum. Doesn’t matter where it’s from as long as it is tea tree.
  11. Favorite step of your skincare routine?
Masks! They’re so soothing, require minimal effort and makes my skin feel so good. Maybe cleanser too, it’s nice to have oil free skin for a while.
  12. What’s on your skincare wishlist?
Hmm, not sure! I’m pretty pleased with what I have and use now. I don’t really want to buy any really expensive things. However, I wish that Vita would take in the Age defense toner again, it’s been gone for ages.

Feel free to do this one too if you want!
It’s always fun to read what others have to say.

Things to do on a rainy day

Read a good book

Who could resist cuddling up under a warm, soft blanket with a good book in your hand, and maybe a warm cup of tea or a glass of wine at your side? I know I wouldn’t mind that at all. It is also my go-to whenever it’s dark and gloomy outside. It also makes you appreciate how lucky we are to have a roof over our heads when the weather is that bad.

Bake something

When it’s raining is the perfect occasion to bake. Whether it’s a proper cake, a pie or just something simple like dough buns, you could barely ever go wrong with it. I love making cinnamon rolls when i’m bored because they last for quite a while, and everyone in my family loves them so I always have someone to share them with. ( As much as I like to think so, I can not devour 18 cinnamon rolls on my own).

Sit outside and listen to the rain

This one was inspired by Storm (Yes, the person, not the weather). She told me about how her and her partner would sit outside under a roof and just listen to the rain. It sounds like quite the peaceful activity. I love going to rainymood.com to listen to the rain and thunder so I could imagine listening to the real thing would be just as good.

Finally wash your make up brushes

I’m sure we are a whole lot of people who either forget or procrastinate when it comes to cleaning make up brushes. Maybe you just forgot, maybe you intentionally put it off because you find it to be sooo boring.. Now is the time to do it! Your skin will thank you afterwards, clean brushes are the best for your face.

Practice your skills

As long as its an inside activity! Practice drawing, play the piano, paint a masterpiece.. Any skill can be improved and using rainy days for that is perfect. I often use rainy days as an excuse to stay inside and draw. I don’t really feel like I’m getting better but at least I am getting some much needed practice. I would also love to learn to play an instrument, but I don’t have the patience for it.

Have a spa night / Self pamper session

I love trying out new face masks, finding new pamper items to make myself feel better. Self care is very important, and setting aside days or evenings for it can improve your mood a whole lot. The fresh and rejuvenating feeling you have afterwards is always so rewarding and really shows you that it was totally worth it.

Watch movies / series

Is there a movie or a show you’ve been wanting to watch for a while? Do you feel guilty about watching things when the weather is nice? Now is the perfect time then! I rarely ever watch movies because I always feel like I have something more useful to do, so rainy days is my excuse to watch some. Alternatively, invite your friends over for a movie night.

Organize / De-clutter

I don’t know about you, but I love reorganizing and de-cluttering my home, it always makes me feel so at peace once I’m done. Over the years I have leaned more towards a minimalist lifestyle so removing things help a lot. It is also easier to keep things clean if you don’t have stuff laying around everywhere.

So that were some things that I do whenever it rains (quite often, lately).

What do you usually do when the weather is bad?

Jelly on your face…?

Seems like it! The Jelly face masks were revealed earlier this year and they are now to be found in Lush stores everywhere, and they’re really interesting. I had this pot sent to me by the lovely Storm and I really fell in love with it and how fun it is.

Get back the skin you myth’d with toning witch hazel and antioxidant green tea. Why not give it a Troy?

This face mask contains ingredients like apple juice, green tea, witch hazel, Sicilian lemon and Brazilian orange oils, and neroli oil. All of these will help brighten your complexion and work on any trouble spots you might have. All of the ingredients are ethically sourced and they are all vegan so it’s safe to use for pretty much anyone. The ingredients used have exfoliating, rejuvenating and moisturizing properties so they will be a treat for your skin.

What is made kind of obvious by the name, is that they have somewhat of a jelly texture to them. It honestly feels like Lush accidentally combined a shower jelly with one of the fresh face masks one day and just rolled with it. It woDSC_0202rks, although it is a bit lumpy when you use it. You’re supposed to either rub the jelly directly onto your face, or break off a piece and rub it between your hands to form more of a paste before applying it to your face. I chose the latter,  and it kind of looks and feels like the Mask of Magnaminty from Lush.

It is not as tingly or cooling, but it does feel good on the skin, and you can really feel the witch hazel work on any impurities you might have. I had a very recent breakout around my nose and boy did it attack that area. My skin felt a lot better afterwards though, so for me it was definitely worth the pain as it stopped the spot from growing bigger.

The mask is to be left on for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water. I used warm water and a washcloth and it was fairly easy to remove, it just took a couple of wipes here and there to get it all off. I didn’t feel any immediate miracles happening with my skin but as time went on it felt better and better. My skin felt really rejuvenated the morning after and I am definitely going to use this again, at least enough times to use up everything in the pot it came in. The pot is part of the recycling program Lush has too so you can keep it and trade it in for a free fresh face mask when you have five empty ones. Unfortuately the jelly mask doesn’t count as a fresh face mask so you can’t exchange the pots for it.

All in all, I would give this mask 8/10, it would have been a full score if I had felt any immediate effects.

Have you tried a jelly mask before? What did you think of it?

I received a sample of this clay mask from L’Oreal and it had enough for two (could have stretched it to three) uses and I was really happy with it! (Although it was sent to me for free, all of my opinions are my own.) I have tried their purifying clay mask before and I was very happy with the result from that so my expectations were high. I used a brush to apply it to my face and it went on in a thin, smooth layer. I think it has been the easiest application I have ever experienced with a clay mask and I truly enjoyed how it felt on my skin.

I noticed that the layer I had on dried fairly quickly but I decided to keep the mask on my face for the entire duration of the suggested time that was 10 minutes. It stiffened up my face like a clay mask would and I found it a bit uncomfortable because I couldn’t smile and I definitely couldn’t frown without it feeling like I was cracking my entire face up.

The mask contains charcoal and other detoxifying ingredients and I could see it attacking the blackheads on my nose, drying in small circles around them and it honestly felt a bit weird. My nose did look clearer when I washed it off though so it definitely must have done something to it. I would have showed a before and after picture but blackheads and all of that makes me feel all queasy and squeamish.

When I rinsed the mask off of my face, I was greeted with the softest feeling skin that I have ever felt in my whole life. My face felt like it was new and I was sad to have finished my second application already, definitely wanting more of this great mask. After using roughly 50 different kinds of sheet masks last year, I feel like this is the year of the clay mask for me and I am really glad I got to test this one out! I would definitely purchase this on my own if I am in need of a face mask in the future and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to give their face a good detox treatment.

Have you tried any of the clay masks from L’Oreal? What did you think of them?

Every summer I usually splurge a bit on a few new books to keep myself entertained when it’s too warm outside. This summer has been way warmer than any in my recent memory so I decided to just go to the book store to take advantage of the Air Conditioner there, and to find a few new reads. I noticed they had a 3-for-2 deal on English pocket books (pocket means paperback here). Books here are fairly expensive, these retailed for 149 NOK (roughly 17 dollars) per piece, so I’m glad the third was free. I chose a good variety of books, Armada being the thinnest at 368 pages, and American Gods being the thickest at 736 pages. I’m really looking forward to read all of them! I also picked up a moisturizing face mask, and a hypoallergenic mascara from Isadora at the drugstore next door from the book store. I usually use the Lush Eyes Right mascara, but mine had dried out and this one was on sale so i opted to go for that instead.

Neil Gaiman – American Gods

Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life. But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow’s best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and a rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself. Life as Wednesday’s bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined. Soon Shadow learns that the past never dies…and that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing – an epic war for the very soul of America – and that he is standing squarely in its path.

Ernest Cline – Armada

Zack Lightman has spent his life dreaming. Dreaming that the real world could be a little more like the countless science-fiction books, movies, and videogames he’s spent his life consuming. Dreaming that one day, some fantastic, world-altering event will shatter the monotony of his humdrum existence and whisk him off on some grand space-faring adventure. But hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little escapism, right? After all, Zack tells himself, he knows the difference between fantasy and reality. He knows that here in the real world, aimless teenage gamers with anger issues don’t get chosen to save the universe.

And then he sees the flying saucer.

Even stranger, the alien ship he’s staring at is straight out of the videogame he plays every night, a hugely popular online flight simulator called Armada—in which gamers just happen to be protecting the earth from alien invaders. No, Zack hasn’t lost his mind. As impossible as it seems, what he’s seeing is all too real. And his skills—as well as those of millions of gamers across the world—are going to be needed to save the earth from what’s about to befall it. It’s Zack’s chance, at last, to play the hero. But even through the terror and exhilaration, he can’t help thinking back to all those science-fiction stories he grew up with, and wondering: Doesn’t something about this scenario seem a little…familiar?

Erin Morgenstern – The Night Circus

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it, no paper notices plastered on lampposts and billboards. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within these nocturnal black-and-white striped tents awaits an utterly unique, a feast for the senses, where one can get lost in a maze of clouds, meander through a lush garden made of ice, stare in wonderment as the tattooed contortionist folds herself into a small glass box, and become deliciously tipsy from the scents of caramel and cinnamon that waft through the air.

Welcome to Le Cirque des Rêves.

Beyond the smoke and mirrors, however, a fierce competition is under way–a contest between two young illusionists, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood to compete in a “game” to which they have been irrevocably bound by their mercurial masters. Unbeknownst to the players, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will.

As the circus travels around the world, the feats of magic gain fantastical new heights with every stop. The game is well under way and the lives of all those involved–the eccentric circus owner, the elusive contortionist, the mystical fortune-teller, and a pair of red-headed twins born backstage among them–are swept up in a wake of spells and charms.

But when Celia discovers that Marco is her adversary, they begin to think of the game not as a competition but as a wonderful collaboration. With no knowledge of how the game must end, they innocently tumble headfirst into love. A deep, passionate, and magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands. Their masters still pull the strings, however, and this unforeseen occurrence forces them to intervene with dangerous consequences, leaving the lives of everyone from the performers to the patrons hanging in the balance.

20170616_135543

After visiting both the book store and the drug store, I decided to stop by H&M  to see if I could find any eye shadows on sale, as recommended by Lisa. I found two that were on sale for 10 NOK (roughly a dollar each) and one for 20 NOK (two dollars). You could see two of these being used in my previous blog post about a bold eye look. I didn’t show any swatches there, so I thought I could include them here! The purple and the blue shades were impressive, but I was a tiny bit disappointed with how sheer the green shade was. Like you would expect a more christmas-y green from that pan, right? Or is it just me having too big expectations?

20170616_135555

I guess I can’t really complain since they were so cheap to begin with! And I will continue to use it in combination with the green shade from the Maybelline 24k palette anyways.

Have you treated yourself to something nice lately?
