6 years, and I’m still in love.

It feels kind of weird to dedicate a title like that, and a blog post like this to a video game, but that is just how it is. For six years now, one game has been with me since day one when it was released, and i have yet to grow properly tired of it. It’s the fifth game in a series, it is a role playing game and its landscapes really reminds me of the ones we have here in Norway. Some have even called it a Norway simulator when they walk through the woods in game. It is far from a hundred percent accurate, but it is pretty close. The mountains I see in the game, I can also see across the river from where I live. Not exact duplicates, but very similar.

Got a guess about what it is? What I’m talking about is the fifth installment in the Elder Scrolls series published by Bethesda, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The first time i played it was when my roommate at the time brought the game home from work, left it in the living room and then went to sleep. I grabbed the game, stuffed it into his Playstation 3 and 17 hours later i was still playing as eagerly as when I first picked up the controller. I kind of regret sitting in front of the TV screen for that long but boy, i just got immersed in it. I had of course played through some of its predecessors, Morrowind and Oblivion, but there was just something about it that captured my heart. It must be the role playing aspect, and the amazing scenery, both above and below ground. Alternatively in a different realm, even.

With the addition of mods and expansions a while later, there was always something new that could be added to the game and it just gives it more and more replayability. I don’t think any of my play throughs have been the same and I’m still discovering things years later.

If you haven’t tried it before and you enjoy role playing/adventure games and dragons, you should give Skyrim a try. I’m sure you wouldn’t regret it. unless you really don’t have time to get sucked into an amazing world. You can follow the storyline of the Dragonborn, or you can just live your life as a hunter.. Or you could be a ruthless assassin or the master of the thieves guild. It is pretty much your imagination that is the limit. With the remastered version, and even a Virtual Reality version to pick from, I’m sure you would find one of them to love.

Every game has a set of characters that everyone seem to love…

But what about the hidden gems? Skyrim has a lot of them, and they are not too hard to find. I do love the ‘main’ characters you meet on your journey through Skyrim as the Dragonborn, but i get the biggest joy from finding a character i usually would not look twice at. Elf characters have never been my thing in Elder Scrolls games, in contrast to Dragon Age, but I have learned to love them throughout the years.

I have invested thousand of hours into the game through these five years, and there is still a lot of things i haven’t done, quests i have missed out on and characters i still have not met yet. Just recently I met my current favorite follower, Aranea Ienith, who is protecting the Shrine of Azura close to Winterhold. I do not read any Wikis when i play a game unless I’m absolutely stuck so I was not aware that she could be a follower. Usually when i have finished the quest to fetch Azura’s Star, I just run off to complete my next objective, but on this one fateful day i accidentally clicked on her and saw that i could ask her to follow me.

I do not regret the decision to make her my follower as she is a powerful destruction mage. Most of the time when we encounter low leveled bandits and wolves, i don’t even have time to ready my spells before she has blasted them off with her own attacks. You might think that this is a bad thing but it is extremely hilarious to just see a body being rocketed off by an ice spike. It is currently not possible to marry this character in the game, but you can recruit her to join the Blades, if you’re in their faction.

Another character that i absolutely adore, and that people don’t seem to talk much about is Karliah. Karliah is an agent of Nocturnal, a Nightingale that used to be affiliated with the Thieves Guild in Riften. She is the granddaughter of Queen Barenziah herself, and the Dragonborns first encounter with her is not exactly pleasant. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say it involved poisoned arrows and a sword to the chest by Mercer Frey.

Karliah becomes a temporary follower in the Thieves Guild questline and i really, really wish it was possible to recruit her as a follower after you finished the quests too. I don’t know how many times I have visited the Nightingale Hall in hopes of her dialogue changing and letting me bring her along. I know that i could probably download mods to fix that, but after Bethesda decided to disable your achievements when you install mods, I’m not as interested in using them.

And last but not least, we have Brelyna Maryon. Brelyna is a student at the College of Winterhold, and you get introduced to her right away in the Hall of Elements where the first class with Tolfdir is held when you join the college. Brelyna is both a marriage candidate (yay!) and a possible follower and she is an avid user of spells. Even if you give her proper weapons, she won’t use them until she runs out of magicka. When you first meet her, she is on the offense about her heritage and her connection to Winterhold. She is rather rude to the Dragonborn but she quickly apologizes and returns to her normal, slightly shy self. I really adore her personality and she is definitely my favorite marriage candidate out of the bunch.

So there, that was my short list of my favorite, underrated characters that i never see enough people talk about. Do you have any favorites that you don’t seem to share with others? Even from other game universes?

Hyped for the special edition!

On the 28th of October I’m so ready to fall in love again! For a while now, we have known that Bethesda is going to remaster The elder scrolls V: Skyrim, and I have just gotten more and more excited.

The game has been my number one favorite ever since it was released on 11/11/11, and I have lost count on how many hours i have spent playing it.. Last time i checked, quite some time ago it was over 2000 hours, which is quite insane! I have probably invested more time into other games too, but let’s not go into that…

With that said, i don’t know if i’ll clock in as many hours just because it’s remastered, but i’m excited to see how the game would feel with “up to date” graphics. I have tried a lot of graphic mods, but having the base game looking like them would be nice. And i think mods are coming to xbox one so that is exciting! Until now, i’ve played both on my old ps3 without mods, and on PC with mods. However, playing on ps3 was so dreadful, the loading screens took literally ages.

I’m just really excited and wanted to share, it has been such a big part of my life for almost five years, it feels like my child at this point, or something. I’m weird, i know! But look at the comparison, it’s beautiful! I wonder what the meshes for the npc’s will look like.

Are you looking forward to anything this year?
